A Favorite Comforting Verse

“The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”

-Zephaniah 3:17, NKJV

Here God is talking to His people coming out of exile. They know pain and suffering. Sadly, in this situation the suffering came as judgment for their rejection of God’s ways and disobedience. However, God is gracious and loving.

This is one of my favorite Old Testament verses. It is personifies God as one who is wildly excited about you and me. He more than a fan. And he is even more than a loving mother or grandmother even though that is what I see imaged in this verse.

God loves you.

Like a mother or grandmother quieting a troubled and hurting child, we see God offering this same loving stance to you and me–i.e. His people. It is a beautiful thing.

Personally, I see the songs God inspires in others as these songs. Such songs speak of His love for you and me touching our hearts like only music can do. And the rejoicing part is a reminder that God rejoices over you for just being you.

You are accept and enough in God’s eyes.

God loves you.
