Forever belonging

In healthy spirituality, belonging is never “on the table.”

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

-Romans 8:15, KJV

When I am struggling with fear, I am usually disconnected from this truth found in Romans 8:15. The spirit of fear is trying to crowd out my belonging as a child of God.

In healthy spirituality, belonging is never “on the table.”

What I mean by this is that my belonging is never predicated on my performance. I cannot do anything so bad that my Father in Heaven disowns me. We are family. Forever.

When I understand this–really understand this in my heart–I am set free from fear.

I become sick spirituality when I fail to grasp this. This is when condemnation enters into my heart. Fear tries to steal my peace. But I can have peace knowing that the most important judgment about me has been passed:

I am in. God has called my His child. Forever. I belong.
