Forgiveness Performance

So watch yourselves.

“If your brother or sistersins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them.”

-Luke 17:3, NIV

Judging YOUR forgiveness performance!

Some cheaters might cite how they do not think you will forgive them as a reason to abandon you after cheating. In other words, they are not sorry enough to come back the relationship they blew up and try to repair it. So, they blame your (future) forgiveness performance for why they won’t try.

Making it all about how well you “forgive” tells me that they are unwilling to repent.

They are not sorry, truly sorry for what they did to you.

Someone who is truly sorry about what they did to you would not worry about your response. They would make it about doing everything in their power to make amends to you.

This person would not act entitled to your forgiveness but see it as it is–a gift.

Sadly, a proud sinner is unlikely to repent. So, they will find ways to avoid accountability and shift blame upon their victim. It is a tragedy that their spiritual trajectory is not to a good place (see Hebrews 10:26-27).
