Forgiveness does not work if the person won’t stay to receive it

Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

-Colossians 3:13b, NIV

It is hard to give someone a gift when they are running away from you.

This is the picture of someone who is unwilling to repent and turn to you for the gift of forgiveness. They are not in a position to receive the gift.

Being forgiven is not about demonstrating worthiness. It is a gift. Like every gift, a person must position themselves in order to receive it.

We receive God’s gift of forgiveness when we confess our sins to Him and thereby repent (see I John 1:9).   Forgiveness is not “earned” by our confession. The gift is merely made available for us to receive by positioning ourselves with our hearts in this way.

This applies to cheaters and their cohorts for sure.

They are not able to receive the gift of forgiveness even if we wanted them to do so. The reason being is their actions are the proverbial running away from us, the gift-bearers.   ______________ *A version of this post ran previously.
