When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.
-John 8:44b, NLT
I hate being lied to.
In other words, I don’t like being manipulated because that is what being lied to is about–namely, manipulation. Someone who lies to you is trying to manipulate you.
Cheaters do this to keep us from knowing the truth about their behavior. They want to avoid consequences like divorce for betraying our trust and risking our well-being. Plus, they want others to think poorly of us and not them. So, they lie.
Honestly, even if the truth is a hard thing to hear, I would rather hear that truth than a lie.
A true friend wouldn’t lie to you about what was going on if they knew. Instead, they would tell you the hard truth about the cheating.
Truth is kind. Lies are cruel.*

*Now, there is a cruel way to deliver truth that distorts it. I am not an advocate of that. It must come with love, or it is less than truth, in my opinion, as God is both truth AND love.
